Today, I got caught in the act… of eating a whoopie pie!
I don’t know if you remember those Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies, but they were the
bane sweetness of my existence as a child.
For years, I never learned to navigate the supermarket aisles and never knew that those treats were in the bakery section, isolated and alone from the rest of the Oreos, Nilla Wafers, and Rice Krispy treats of the world. It was so sad, folks. I never found them for years and thought, I didn’t eat my fill of those goodies for a lifetime (which looking back, is a blessing. a very big blessing.).
And for all those years…
I tried to find these whoopie pies, to no avail.
in college, when I actually started learning the ins and outs of the grocery store. I had to buy bread for the usual pb&j, only to find something so. much. better!
I’m sure you can guess what it is…
Just kidding, although that’s a whole other story in itself.
OATMEAL CREME PIES!
My friends, I was reunited with my childhood sweetheart! And I promptly bought 2 whole boxes… to share, of course. 😉 I’m sure you know the feeling of re-discovering something, even so simple, that you thought was long gone. I’m thankful these still exist!
After a year or two of eating them again, I started delving into the delicious world of baking. And a little while ago, even decided to tackle a “healthier” alternative to the whoopie pie. The result?
Well, you can see for yourself in these photos!
This was my second time creating these beauties, and I’m still trying to get that moist&chewy texture that Little Debbie mastered so many years ago. It may take a little while, but my husband and I (as well as friends who come by!) are more than happy to keep experimenting!
I hope you enjoyed this snippet of discovering an old childhood friend. Let me know if you have any suggestions to make the cookies more like Little Debbie’s! xoxo
